About our Dance Program
LyriCo Conservatory offers dance classes in Gainesville, FL for kids, teens and adults, with ballet, tap, jazz, theatre jazz and hip hop on the weekly schedule. Classes are intentionally small, never more than eight students, so every dancer gets real feedback from the teacher in every class.
Students build technique, flexibility, musicality and stage presence in a welcoming studio, and they take that training onto a real stage in our seasonal showcases. Whether your child is taking a first class or preparing for auditions, or you are an adult returning to dance, there is a level here for you. See the full dance class schedule.

Dance Classes We Offer
Ballet and Tap
Classical ballet technique paired with tap rhythm and footwork. Ballet builds posture, strength and line; tap sharpens timing and musicality. Offered for ages 11 to 14 and 14 to 18.
Theatre Jazz and Musical Theatre Jazz
High energy jazz technique with the storytelling of Broadway choreography. Ideal for students who love musicals or want to strengthen their dance for auditions. Offered for ages 7 to 10, 11 to 14 and 14 to 18.
Tap and Jazz
A fun, foundational class for younger dancers ages 7 to 10 that builds rhythm, coordination and confidence.
Hip Hop
Grooves, isolations and choreography to current music, with a focus on clean technique and musicality. Offered for ages 10 to 15.
Adult Dance Classes
Adult Tap and Adult Theatre Jazz for beginners and returning dancers. A supportive class, a great workout and no prior experience required.
Younger Dancers
For ages 5 to 8, our Little LyriCans program introduces movement, music and theatre in a playful, structured setting.
What Makes LyriCo Dance Different
Our classes cap at eight dancers, so the teacher can correct form, build confidence and move each student forward at the right pace. Every class is taught by trained, performing dancers, and our program sits inside a full performing arts conservatory, so dancers can add voice and acting through the Theatre Track when they are ready.
Performance Opportunities
Dance students perform in LyriCo’s seasonal showcases in Gainesville, with real lighting, costumes and an audience. Performing regularly builds the confidence and stage presence that classroom work alone cannot.
What class is best for me?
- Dance Fundamentals (ages 8 and up): Our core dance program focuses on jazz technique, theatrical movement, and performance-ready physicality. Students develop vocabulary, strength, musicality, and coordination through structured progressive instruction. Three levels: Elementary, Middle School, and High School.
- Dance for Littles (ages 4 to 7): A nurturing introduction to movement, rhythm, and stage confidence designed specifically for young dancers. Classes are age-appropriate, playful, and taught with the same high standards as the rest of our program.
- Tap: Percussive, rhythmic, and genuinely fun. Tap develops timing, coordination, and a unique kind of musicality that transfers across styles.
- Ballet: The technical foundation underlying every style of concert dance. Ballet at LyriCo builds strength, alignment, and body awareness with classical rigor.

About Our Head of Dance
Lara Thompson, a Gainesville native, trained at Pofahl Dance Studios and performed with Dance Alive National Ballet. She was a University of Florida Dazzler and has spent over two decades teaching ballet, tap, jazz, and theatrical styles. Passionate about making dance accessible and expressive, Lara leads the dance department at LyriCo with the same standards she holds for every student who walks through the door.

Dance
Lara Thompson, a Gainesville native, began her dance training at Pofahl Dance Studios and performed with Next Generation and Dance Alive National Ballet. She was a University of Florida Dazzler and later danced with the Kentucky Repertory Ballet. Lara holds a master’s degree in nursing science and taught ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop at Pofahl for over ten years. Passionate about making dance accessible and expressive, Lara is excited to bring her experience to LyriCo as the founder of the innovative Dance for Singers class.
Bo
Broadwell
Dance
Bo Broadwell is a performance artist, director, and choreographer with over 20 years of production experience spanning the genres of the industry from cruise line and theme park to Off-Broadway. Bo’s wide range of performance credits include the National Tours of CATS, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Crazy For You. Bo has performed with Dollywood, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Disney cruise lines and has danced alongside Dolly Parton and his favorite, Minnie Mouse! He has worked for Walt Disney World and has been featured in Beauty and the Beast: Live On Stage, The Hoop Dee Doo Revue, Dream Along with Mickey, ABC’s Annual Christmas Day Parade, and the live christening of the DCL Disney Dream cruise liner with Jennifer Hudson.
Bo made his Off-Broadway debut in the musical Trip Of Love starring Nia Sioux and Darlene Love ultimately becoming the production’s dance captain. Bo has taught and adjudicated with studios across the southeast and worked with masters such as Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking and Ben Vereen. Bo’s directorial and choreographic work has been nominated for Broadway World and MTA awards and includes show creation for Carowinds Theme Park and Celebrity Cruise Line.

Thompson
Dance
Esther Thompson joins the LyriCo team bringing over 13 years of dance experience. Esther is experienced in both Musical Theater and Dance. She has studied ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and acrobatics. She has experience as a choreographer for musical theater, contemporary and hip hop dances. Esther has performed with Dance Alive National Ballet in The Nutcracker, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Action Bug Lady Hero.
Mandy
Lanier
Dance
Mandy Lanier is a dancer and choreographer from South Florida, currently earning a BFA in dance from the University of Florida. She is an interdisciplinary artist, creating many dance films and interactive live performances in collaboration with other makers in the area. With strong foundations in dance technique and resistance training, she’s passionate about pushing the limits of the body in a way that’s intuitive and safe. Most of all she sees movement as a form of worship and is excited to spread her love of dance to those she teaches.

Mantooth
Dance
Lila Mantooth is a performer and choreographer pursuing an AA in dance at Santa Fe College. She trained for 11 years at a studio in Kentucky and danced on her high school dance team. Lila is an ensemble member of Dance Theatre of Santa Fe, where she has worked with visiting artists Doug Varone and Irene Rodriguez. She choreographed “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago and “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from Annie for Santa Fe College productions.
Emma
Upright
Dance
Emma Upright has been passionate about dance since the age of three. At just eight years old, she joined No Limits Dance Studio and began competing by the age of ten. Trained in a variety of styles, including ballet, contemporary, modern, tap, acro, jazz, and improv, Emma brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the dance floor. A graduate of Oakleaf High School, Emma pursued business studies alongside her dance education. She majored in Dance at Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she was also an accomplished member and student choreographer for the school’s dance company, DanceWorks. Since 8th grade, Emma has been sharing her love for dance as a teaching assistant, and she continues to inspire young dancers today. She taught ballet and contemporary for a couple years to young dancers at her old studio. Her passion for performance shines through in everything she does, whether on stage or in the classroom. Emma is a senior at UF and is working toward her BA in Dance, with a minor in Mass Communications. She plans to teach, choreograph, and be a social media manager.
FAQ
How old does my child have to be to start taking dance lessons?
Dance lessons are great at any age! But we focus on theatre movement and dance starting at around 4.
Do you offer private Dance Lessons?
Yes! Our Dance instructors are available to help choreograph or get you ready for an audition in private sessions.
Do I need to stay for my child’s lesson?
You are welcome to drop off your child and return a few minutes before their lesson is done! If you would like to sit in on your child’s music class, we always have an open door policy and you are free to sit in at any time.
How many students in each semi private group class.
Classes range from 5 to 8 students. Class size varies to make sure all students get individual attention. This is considerably smaller than traditional dance classes, which can be upwards of 20-30 participants.

Do you have any performances?
Yes we do! For music students, we have two big events every year (typically one in the winter, and one in late spring). We also offer smaller performance opportunities throughout the year as well.
How long do classes run?
These classes will run year round, but if you want to withdraw we just ask for a 30 day notice.
