About our Brass Program
At LyriCo Conservatory, our brass program offers a dynamic blend of classical precision and modern versatility. From orchestral excerpts to jazz improvisation and rock-inspired horn lines, our curriculum supports all brass instruments and playing styles. Whether you’re just learning to buzz or mastering advanced solos, our lessons are designed to build technique, confidence, and creative expression at every stage of your musical journey.
- Breath Support Basics: Learn proper diaphragmatic breathing to produce a steady, controlled airflow.
- Embouchure Formation: Develop correct lip placement and tension for a clear, resonant tone.
- Long Tone Practice: Sustain notes evenly to build endurance, tone quality, and pitch control.
- Scale Proficiency: Master major and minor scales to improve finger coordination and intonation.
- Articulation Skills: Practice tonguing techniques for clean note starts, from legato to staccato.
Our Brass Teachers

Joseph
Freeman
Guitar, Low Brass
Joseph Freeman is a multi-instrumentalist and educator specializing in tuba, low brass, classical and jazz guitar, and rock performance. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Education from UTC, where he studied under Dr. Kenyon Wilson and Stephen Brannen. Joseph has performed in orchestras, marching bands, and rock groups, and has taught through R.I.S.E. Chattanooga, Cadek Conservatory, and more. Outside of music, he enjoys disc golf, the outdoors, and time with his cat, Eamon.
FAQ
How old does my child have to be to start taking music lessons?
Music lessons are great at any age! But we focus on primary instruments starting at around 5. We start brass lessons beginning at around 7-8, depending on if the child can comfortably hold the instrument.
Do you offer instrument rentals?
We Do not offer Brass Rentals. There are Several places in Gainesville that offer this service, and we are happy to recommend them based on your needs.
Do I need to stay for my child’s lesson?
You are welcome to drop off your child and return a few minutes before their lesson is done! If you would like to sit in on your child’s music class, we always have an open door policy and you are free to sit in at any time.
How long does it take to learn an instrument?
There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn an instrument. With regular practice, a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
How many students in each group class.
Classes range from 5- 8 students. Class size varies to make sure all students get individual attention.

All books, level wristbands, and access to our knowledge base and scheduling software are included.
Do you have any perfomances?
Yes we do! For music students, we have two big events every year (typically one in the winter, and one in late spring). We also offer smaller performance opportunities throughout the year as well.
How long do classes run?
These classes will run year round, but if you want to withdraw we just ask for a 30 day notice.
